ISO 8678 Cup Head Square Neck Bolts with Small Head and Short Neck
Product Information
Product Overview
ISO 8678 cup head square neck bolts are a specific carriage-bolt form, sometimes searched as small-head carriage bolts or coach bolts. The standard defines a reduced domed head and a short square neck, distinguishing this configuration from general cup head square neck bolts with larger heads or longer necks.
The smooth, rounded head gives the exposed side a clean finish, while the square neck beneath it engages a matching opening or the surrounding material to help prevent the bolt from turning as the nut is tightened. The neck is short, so the fit between the head, clamped material, and square section matters. Conventional carriage bolts should not be treated as dimensionally interchangeable without checking the relevant dimensions.
ISO 8678:1988 covers metric threads from M6 through M20 and nominal lengths from 12 mm to 160 mm. Its product grade B identifies the specified product grade, not a bolt strength class. The required mechanical property class must therefore be specified separately according to the application.
These bolts are used in timber-to-metal joints, fixtures, panels, equipment housings, and other assemblies where a rounded visible head and a square anti-rotation neck are useful. Selection should focus on head and neck dimensions, grip thickness, bolt length, thread engagement, and required mechanical properties.
