DIN 985 Thin Nylon Insert Lock Nuts
Product Information
Product Overview
DIN 985 Thin Nylon Insert Lock Nuts are low-profile hexagon nuts developed for threaded assemblies where the available axial space is limited. Their reduced nut height is the defining feature, making them different from standard-height and high-profile nylon insert lock nuts. This compact geometry allows the nut to occupy less space along the fastened joint while retaining the basic function of a prevailing-torque lock nut.
The reduced height of DIN 985 is particularly useful when a conventional nut would create unnecessary projection beyond the joint or interfere with surrounding components. A thinner nut can help accommodate restricted clearances, recessed structures, closely spaced components, and assemblies where overall fastening height needs to be minimized. It can also be useful when the available threaded length is limited and a full-height nut would not be practical.
The thin form should not be treated simply as a smaller version of a high nut. Reducing the nut height also reduces the amount of internal thread available for engagement with the mating bolt or stud. For this reason, DIN 985 is intended for applications where its lower profile is compatible with the mechanical requirements of the joint. It should not automatically be substituted for a taller nut when higher load capacity or greater resistance to thread stripping is required.
DIN 985 is commonly selected for compact mechanical assemblies, automotive components, machinery, electrical equipment, agricultural machinery, and general equipment where fastening space is restricted. Typical selection considerations include available clearance, bolt projection, required thread engagement, joint loading, and the dimensions of adjacent components. Its value is primarily in solving dimensional and installation constraints rather than increasing the mechanical capacity of the fastening joint.
